I teach languages and many people ask me what are the best books to read when learning a foreign language. Should they be books specifically to build and teach something? Should they be classics, that we should all read? Should they be something a friend has recommended? No and no. Read what you really love. If you love it you will be less likely to give up, because learning a language is blood, sweat and tears anyway, why make it worse on yourself. If you like to take a bath a read harlequin romance, read this in your target language. Read something for fun; something, that maybe you feel you would not read in your own language because you would feel guilty as you might consider this a waste of time or not practical. Something that in your heart of hearts you would really enjoy. Even if it is a Harry Potter book!
In a book like Harry Potter you have many special words that are connected to magic, however, every book has specific words. So this is ok, as long as this is in your interest.. If you were to read the Harry Potter series in your target language, start to finish, to the end; you would speak your target language. You would see the grammatical and language patterns over and over. The good news is that you can buy Harry Potter in both your target language and English and read them side by side, this way you do not have to look up every word in the dictionary. The one thing that would be off, is your pronunciation. But this will come once you hear the language over and over, and if you are not a complete beginner of course. So think about it, you could find out the about the end of Harry Potter and learn Spanish or Russian, even on vacation on the beach. Not a bad idea.
