How much time does it take to achieve fluency in a language
In my experience working with people, on average, it takes about 10 years to be fluent in a language. However, it depends how you define fluency. Generally, you need to study a language for about 10 years to be good. Of course to be conversational, you can do this in almost no time. But fluency is using the language almost like a native speaker. After all that is about how long it took for you to gain a level of mastery over your own native language. In fact at 10 years old you might not even be defined as fluent in a language.
Fluent in a language in less time
I have seen people who were not talented gain fluency in a language very quickly, in about five years, however, this came with blood, sweat and tears.
