Why people do not learn languages
People do not learn languages because they have wrong expectations. Wrong expectations about 1) how a language is learned. 2) how much time is required to learn a language 3) about their only natural abilities to learn a language.
The expectation is that they just can just pick up a language. They have heard many stories of people who do this. But the reality is you really can not just pick up a language.
Why do people not learn a language
Because they do not study enough. It is not from lack of talent. Everyone says they are not good with languages. What is more relevant is how many hours a day do you study?
You have to memorizes thousands of words, then some grammar to learn a language. But Americans (I am one) believe it is just a more casual endeavour and some people have a gift and some do not.
The truth is, I live in Poland and most of my students have been studying English for over 10 years. They study everyday. You can learn learn much faster than that of course, even be quite good in a language in 6 months.
If you want to learn a language you have to have proper expectations, study everyday and believe you are not much worse or better than anyone else in terms of innate ability to learn a language.
