Why language classes do not work
Why taking language classes do not work
Language classes can work but more times than not, do not teach the student the language. Why? Most people sign up with high expectations, some people even go away to immersion camps, these are all good, but often do not yield results. The reason is simple. Diffusion of responsibility. The student shifts the responsibility of learning to the school or teacher or course, often with high expectations. I teach and learn languages and at my start this is what I did and observed.
What language classes are
Language classes are cream. After you study hard all week on your own, burning the midnight oil and listening to language audio mp3s, language classes are an opportunity to boast your moral. That is it.
What is an effective language class
Language classes are effective if they have conversation and fun cultural discussion so it makes the language alive and inspires you to study on your own more. Or language classes are effective if you have a drill master. A drill master is someone who turns theory into a reflex response. Someone who forces you to speak correct grammar through exercises rather than theory.
Should you take language classes
Yes I think for every 10 hours you study on your own you can take one hour of class. If you did this you will make huge progress, but if you think you will just show up, it will not work. So classes are good, Self study is the best.
