Subtitles to learn a language
Watch films with the sound off and Subtitles in your target foreign language. This way it is like reading a book in a foreign language, however, you have a lot more images to keep you interested. I stop the movie at every new subtitle line. Translate it to English literally than, translate it again in a more natural way. If you watch films with subtitles in a foreign language and you do this for maybe 10 films, the amount of words you will know will bring you to the next level in your language learning. Further, the language in the films will be modern and now, rather than language out of a language learning book. You will see the same patterns over and over again. If you want to know how to learn a language, this is one technique that is fun and helpful.
