Howard Webb was the referee at the the Poland - Austrian Euro Cup match. It was a great game. Poland dominated as Austria had no attacking force, however, Austria was able to tie it up in the last minutes with the help of referee Howard Webb. Everyone saw that Webb was penalizing the Polish team and ignoring the Austrian fouls but could do nothing about it. If you ask Howard Webb why he did so, he might say I tried to be fair. But from a bird’s eye view and instant reply you could see he was, in my opinion, an Austrian player in a referee’s uniform. But over all a very well played game by Poland.
The Austrian Government’s coordinator-in-chief for EURO Heinz Palme, totally agreed with Polish fans. That is Howard Webb was wrong. Read what you want into this… that the respect International referee, Tadeusz Diakonowicz, said that financial and political matters stood behind the controversial decision made by Howard Webb.
Howard Webb’s motivation
1. Howard Webb is an English football fan, and Poland basically replaced England
2. Howard Webb wanted Austria not to lose all four games, as Austria was the hosting team, he help them tie. He thought he was being kind to the Austrians. This is why Howard Webb was the 12th Austrian player.
3. Some people say Howard Webb got money, but I have no evidence for this, but possible.
Whatever his motives, you will see if you watch the replays, Howard Webb ignored the Austrian fouls compared to the Polish fouls at a greater 2 to 1 ratio. How is the honest? He can not be that stupid can he?
Remember Hegel said “the truth is neither seen at the beginning or the end but always the whole” you have to consider all the events leading to his Howard Webb’s call not just his one call.
Polish coach’s comment on Howard Webb
The Polish Coach who has been in football for over 45 years said, ‘he never saw anything like that in his life.’ He did not want to say it directly about Howard Webb, but this is what he was talking about, Howard Webb’s bias or maybe dishonesty.

i totaly agree, i find that howard webb is a totaly bitch ignoring all the austrian fouls… even some one that didnt know the rules would do better, a monkey in a referee’s jersey.

Howard Webb’s motive was that Austria will lose against every team they play in the EuroCup in 2008, however, because Austria was the home team he wanted to give them some saving pride so he helped them tie at the expense of Poland’s victory, however, as a referee its was unfair. For example, the guy from Norway the Austrian’s put in the game- his only purpose was to push around the Polish players it seemed, he clearly was fouling the Polish players and the Howard Webb ignored it. When the Polish players defended themselves, penalty.

Howard Webb is also a big English football fan. He is upset that Poland eliminated English for a place in the Euro2008 cup.

Howie is done
Yeah he stopped freekick, but not becouse the austrian player has fouled the polish player, he stoped the game when polish player has retuned the slap. Can’t You see that? Why Webb didnt stop the freekick just after Austrian player has hit the polish player into face? He stopped the game when Austrians wasted their freekick.
As for the offside, ther wasn no offside becouse polish player wasnt passing the ball to Roger. He was shooting for goal. Austrian player has blocked this shot and the ball went in the Roger’s way, so he shot the goal.

Yea… the guy saw foul when the young Austria player (blond one) hit Jacek Bak (Polish defender) and as Boruc saved the shot He gave another chance to those Fritzl sons… and then PREMIER LEAGUE REFEEREE Gave penalty for a normal fight! That kind of “fouls” is common in UK…so why didn’t he give 11 penalties per match during Premier League matches?…

it was so fu*king unfair.. football is going worse cuz people like webb.. as sameone said: he was 12th player of austria / he didnt see any austrias fauls. this guy really sux and i hope he just finished his careere. this match shout be play again!

I’m a football referee myself who referees semi professional. The comments I’m reading are bang out of order. It was a penalty. He warned the Polish player before the free kick was taken then made the free kick be retaken, which was superp refereeing. Then the Polish player decided to ignore Howard Webb warning, then correctly awarded a penalty kick to Austria. If you want to blame anyone, blame the Polish player for giving away the penalty.

@Larry I know it is hard being a referee, no one is 100% happy. However, it was not just one call that got fans upset it was the whole game he was ignoring cheap shots by the Austrians. Go back and look at the guy from Norway he was attacking the Polish play with his fist who was just standing there. I should find the youtube of it. It was all the events that lead up to that moment not just that moment. I can not imagine how he could have ignored so many cheap shots. Maybe Howard Webb did not see it. But if so Howard Webb should not referee another game if that was the case. I think personal threats against him go too far as ‘peace and love’ its only a game, but man Howard Webb is either very dishonest or a strange kind of an idiot.
