Lame excuses people use for not learning a language

“I am not good with languages”-No one is and everyone is. It is about finding the techniques you like and works for you.

“I know someone who just picked up a language in a few months, just by being there”. I do not believe it, I have taught 1,000s of students and this does not happen, unless you are a Mozart of language. Think about it.  Please think about it.  To speak a language lets say you need 6,000 words and phrases.  Then lots of grammar etc.  So are you telling me you know someone who was able to learn 200 words and phrase a day and grammar?  Just because it was ‘in the air’.  Try to learn 10 words a day and see how hard it is, and see how long it sticks.  Not true, not true not true.  Its just people talking. People love to talk.  I have taught and learned languages for years and lived in various places. To speak a language its blood, sweat and tears.

“I know someone who can speak five languages”-good for them
“Learning disabilities”-These are real, but so what, I have them, plus I had bleeding in my brain, but I learned Polish one of the hardest languages in the world. Plus I will be 44 this spring, so do not say “I am too old”.

“I have no time”-Think about the time you spend thinking about nothing, like on your commute. Think about the about of time you spend worrying.

“I will never use it”.-Everything you learn helps your whole brain thinking directly or indirectly.

“Everyone speaks English”-What? Not true, not even in the USA; and if you speak Ukrainian in Ukraine for example doors will be open for you.

“Too hard”-Compared to what? walking? eating? sitting?  You learned all these things, as did everyone in the world. Everyone speaks a language, and there is not reason you cannot learn another unless you are slothful. Which you are not.

“I tried in high school or before and failed” So what. I tried to kiss a girl in High school and failed. But did I did not give up? I failed accounting in college only to become an accountant. Can’t means won’t.
