Why Learning A New Language May Make You Forget Your Old One
I have experienced first language attrition. I am an American from Boston and have lived in Krakow Poland for almost four years. I thought it would never happen but I mix Polish and English. I also am not up on all the new slag in the States. However, since I teach English my grammar has perhaps improved, or at least become more British. If you learn a language you your brain grows and expands, this is fact and you see the world differently. But an non permanent side effect might be the way you use English might change if you do not speak it often. This article outlines Learn a new language forget your own language It points out that you do not forget your native language, rather its more of an adaptive strategy to better learn a second language better. And again the net effect on your brain is only positive.
