Memory and traumatic events

How trauma affects memory

I recall reading a while back that there was a study where subjects were shown a series of Photos. Most were neutral or pleasant; however, inter mixed, pictures of traumatic scene, things that are universally horrible, accidents and such. After the subjects viewing the photos were given a memory recall test connected to the photos they viewed. The photos which came after the traumatic pictures were recalled little or none by the subjects. In fact the results were very definitive.

The conclusions, extrapolations and speculations from this study are many. For example, if you want to learn a language, relax and enjoy and make sure it’s stimulating in a positive way. Make your language learning memorable and you will remember it.

If you grew up in an emotionally turbulent home, then for sure your academic performance was not up to its potential, as the limbic area is integrated heavily to memory.
