Techies that learn languages

One thing that I noticed when I have been teaching languages is IT or tech guys have unusual language learning abilities. Unusual in a strange, but good sense. Let me explain. Since I have been teaching English in Poland, I noticed that the IT guys have a very rich vocabulary. They spend all day reading forums and manuals and using software which defaults to the English language. They work in English, even though unspoken all day long. Rarely have they ever really studied grammar. They simply learn English from the internet and computers, they have to. When they start to take lessons they think can not speak the language. But the fact is, just because they have used it in their techy world, they speak very well. They are just rusty with oral skills, but the base is there. Usually they are men and they approach language learning in a very determined left brain way. But I have to say, with the exception of weaker speaking skills techies are really amazing in language learning.

Indeed we find that many of our partners around the world find strong synergies between IT training and English language training, converting their existing IT training centres into an English language training centre and vice versa.

That’s a funny observation. I would never have guessed that IT techies and learning a language are connected.
