I never had a problem with vkontakte.ru or any of the other sites I recommend. Here is the issue, if you sign up on a Russian girls website you will get an English speaking Russian girl to chat with. But you will also compete with all the other guys who speak English and are trying to win the heart of a Russian girl for love, because she is on a western type website.
I think anything good comes with patience, therefore try those sites again. Use a translate tool if you need to. On those sites you will find gems, girls that are not too westernized and are simple Russian girls from the countryside. Not always of course. But you can find these girls.
If not try any of the other Russian dating sites on the web, some are better than others. There are free ones and pay one, like freepersonals.ru to facebook to .elenasmodels.com (not free), but look around on a few of them.

Im just wondering what you think are the best sites for and American (only knows English) who searching for a Russian women. I think love.ru is very difficult to navigate.
